Gunpowder, treason, and bonfires, oh my!

Yesterday, the 5th of November (remember, remember), I celebrated Guy Fawkes Night for the first time.  Or Bonfire Night.  You pick.

After some research on Wikipedia as to what this holiday is actually about, I still don’t quite understand why it’s celebrated.  The dude committed treason and wanted to blow up the House of Lords and kill the king, if I understand it correctly.

But let’s be honest, any holiday that gives me a fireworks show to watch is A-Ok in my book.  I hear there were supposed to bonfires, and burning effigies of Guy Fawkes, but I didn’t get to see any of that.  Either way, it’s better than watching V For Vendetta and drinking the night away - I celebrated a real British holiday in London.  Check that one off the bucket list.

I took the slowest tube ride EVER to South London, where I was only able to find one of the 5 girls I was supposed to meet there (due to tube issues).  At least we had each other!  We made our way to Clapham Common park to see the show, which was great.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people in one place.

Because it was so crowded, we could hardly walk down the street, let alone get into a pub to sit down, so we waited for the tube station to open back up (it was exit-only for the duration of the fireworks display), and went back home to writing our papers.

As I’m writing this, I can see about 7 different fireworks displays from my window, and two are really close.  Awesome.

Fun fact: there were two extra special things about this year’s Bonfire Night:

  1. It was the 405th anniversary of the Gunpowder and Treason plot
  2. The firefighters are on strike, so everything is just a little bit more exciting

In other news, today I finished 3 of my papers for good.  I am as happy with them as I’m going to be, and I refuse to do anything else to them.  Despite being a perfectionist, I am a firm believer that you just have to stop somewhere.  I am 95% finished with my 4th paper, my Best Practices Guide on Online Video (a mere 20 pages).  Just debating adding something to it that may or may not be necessary, or leaving it as-is.  Getting a Masters is exhausting.  My brain is going to need a rest very soon.
